Ng

In the summer of 1985, the San Francisco police unearthed a grisly discovery. The bodies of 25 victims, men, women and children were found, on a remote ranch along with a homemade dungeon and explicit videotapes. Two men were arrested for the horrific murders, but only one would face prosecution. This turned out to be one of the most grim, devious and damning cases in California history. This is the true story of Charles Ng, the first Chinese serial killer in America.

La Captive

Hidden from one's eye, in the far end of the crypt,
a syncopated fight begins.
This strange woman that nothing frightens more than herself,
it's her, the Captive, prisoner of her own body.

Tormented soul, prey of unfathomable mutations,
monster-woman, woman-monster,
your fight reveals intimate fearsome eruptions,
your resignation is wise,
tomorrow is an other day and everything will start again.

Once upon a time
a strange manor house
overhanging the town...

A conscious computer has been the holy grail of artificial intelligence research for decades. This film doesn't deal with morality, it explores the cognitive consequences of a thinking machine. How would a man-made consciousness differ from a human one? Would they even be able to recognize each other? And most importantly: how is our perception of the world linked to finding our place in it?

The camera pans through her urban landscapes, creating a tale of silent cities, distant childhood memories, gloomy nights, lonely alleys and imposing buildings from foreign European cities. Interlaced with associations, poems and writings from contemporary and more distant periods, the film penetrates into her unsettling images, rendering the dramatic events of this and of the previous century. In the words of Trainin, 'the lens unfolds x ray images, excavating nostalgia, penetrating the opacity o

Upon hearing a disturbing message of the filmmaker?s mother talking about how remorseful she is from the way she raised her, the filmmaker journeys home to face her mother, their relationship and ultimately herself. Interspersed between striking interviews of her mother and grandmother, the film is laced with images of the filmmaker running and swimming in the ocean. The documentary is constructed of only the footage that was shot by the attendees and was edited under the sensitive supervision of Producer, Joseph Christiana. FAMOUS unwittingly tells the story of how a seemingly harmless night of off-color fun abruptly takes a turn for the worst. Aside from the avant-garde qualities of the director?s vision, the

In this version, a very simple manipulation has been enacted upon the film. By restricting the communicative abilities of the film, the ways in which meaning is drawn from a movie is addressed. The restriction also affects the sensationalist nature of the original work, drawing the viewer out of the somewhat passive viewing experience colored by camp or nostalgia, and into a mo

Buka is an experimental, meditative, psychologically oriented short film about a young woman who lives in her own world physically and psychically isolated. I wanted to make a film which use visuality and movements rather then dialogue or text. We started the work with conversations about emotions, like lonelines, being separated, lost, scared and the feeling of lost. A subjective perception of the world what makes impossible to change ones life. A long term daydreaming, where phantasy and reality becomes equal and mixed up. The character Buka was born through these conversations.

Poetic short film about the fate of the book, partially based on the short story ?The Library? by Miljenko Jergovic and a poem ?Lament for Vjenica? by Goran Simic. This film tries to capture the most important legacy of Jorge Luis Borges and Jos? Lezama Lima: Love for books and Libraries. It is an exercise of poetic passion for this cultural force. Phrases by Rodrigo Fres?n, Rainer Maria Rilke, Charles Baxter, Elsa Cross, Audre Lorde and others are totally dissolved in this homage to the journey itself, andthose wise words accompanied the images of birds, streets of Sarajevo, the empty patio o

And I Cried

We live in a world besieged and besotted by image. Everyone, it seems, wants their fifteen minutes and plenty of people will do whatever it takes to get a piece of the celebrity cake. And I Cried is a film about wishing to be a movie star. Being a star is about shining bright, a brilliant flash of light against a velvety black night sky. And I Cried is an exploration, a celebration, a lamentation, of our obsession with the star and the image.

In A Present Distance??? explores the complex terrain of motherhood, through an experimental narrative about a woman/filmmaker, who travels by train to Quebec City to do research on a film that she is making .
Intangible: "..that which cannot be easily defined, formulated or grasped; vague.."

Digital filmmaker Barton Santello presents a unique an original picture assembled from decades old 8mm film. Textured visuals chosen for their artistic quality, are presented in a dream-like sequence, recalling fragments of memory long forgotten by time. Imagery for this work was choreographed to a psycho-active score by digital electronic musicians 'A Produce' & Loren Nerell.

This short video begins with a symmetrical field of bright colors, which is undergoing constant small changes. The image as a whole is also shaking and shimmering. It's like looking through a kaleidoscope while riding in a car on a very bumpy road. The music consists of a looped chord sequence of pretty, shimmering electronic sounds, which shake in tight coordination with the image. After a while, the image is replaced by a nonshaking kaleidoscope, with a glassy, marbled-looking surface. It becomes apparent that the imagery is taken from tropical fish, swimming in a tank. This is followed by m

The Night the Whole World Caught on Fire

This lovely music video is an abstract setting of the eponymous song by The Feverfew. The visual design, more or less steady throughout, is an 8 by 8 grid of identical images, created from footage of a single flame, and reflected symmetrically within each square of the grid. The image of the flame has been drastically slowed down, so that it changes in time with the underlying pulse of the music. It has also been softened, making it resemble a charcoal drawing. The result is a fairly abstract image which nevertheless maintains the essential feeling of a flame, married to the rhythm of the song

Birdcatcher

Birdcatcher is a dissection of cinema as an object, a process, and a result that reaches beyond both. Employing both cinematic and proto-cinematic means, as well as sculptural, spatial and performative elements, the picture addresses the movie-making impulse and invites comparisons with other basic human urges, such as fetishism, hunting, and the confused tension between science and things beyond reason.
Shot on Super 8 film, and drawing visual influence from early cinema, the meeting point of outmoded cinematic technology and the attempted invisibility of digital media is an important issue

This is an illustration of 7 pieces by poet Becky Cooper, taking the form of 7 letters from Freakshow performers. Each character is given his or her own 'exhibit' within a kind of penny-arcade inspired proscenium. Within this framework, each individual speaks their part, illustrated simply by their proscenium, a super-8 filmstrip, and an instrumental piece by musician Jill Summers. Though vastly different characters, both from one another and from the majority of the general populace, they are shown here dealing with a variety of issues and situations that are, at their heart, extremely common

In 1929 monocular vision was not limited to the gaze of telescopes (Edwin Hubble) or movie cameras (Dziga Vertov). 1929 was also the year that the one-eyed, ?strong to the finish? sailor named Popeye was first introduced to the United States as a comic strip character. And, even after 75 years and 234 movies, Popeye?s rebel yell for the common good, ?I yam what I yam? still resonates with the hope and conviction of his visionary colleagues.

Here, images from Frank Capra???s 1946 movie It???s A Wonderful Life collide with the words of visionary author William S. Burroughs??? reading of his story ???The Junkie???s Christmas.??? The results are surprising as an American dream becomes an American nightmare.

This essay-film is a meditation on the United States? ongoing courtship with radioactivity. Here, the story begins with the Food and Drug Administration?s decision to serve irradiated meat in their School Lunch Program, and ends with a story that William S. Burroughs might have written about using radioactivity to grow tumors as a hip, new fashion statement.

In between, the narrative winds its way through the history of radioactive paint that, in the 1920?s, young women used on their lips and fingernails, radium suppositories that were marketed to men as an early version of Viagra, and rad

Fallen uses the iconic imagery found in mythology and religion to create a modern myth. Presenting itself as a tale of creation, the film illustrates the simultaneous appreciation and paranoia of the technological age. The interest in forms both organic and fabricated is mirrored by a fusion of the contemporary with the ancient. This juxtaposition creates a displaced sense of time presenting the discovery of technology as a gift to humanity rather than a choice. The resulting encounter reflects the powerlessness the individual experiences as technology, society, and our environment continue to

The setting is the London Underground. The film passes through real places and transforms in and out abstract shapes and forms. The music and the images are presented as equal elements in balance and harmony with each other. The film was created using a unique production process with the director/animator also working as the score composer. The images were designed as a reaction to the music.

As the soundtrack comes on, the vertical coloured bars start moving up and down to the rhythmic sound of horses? hooves. This constant movement is interrupted by a pause in the test image. Suddenly, a loud ringing sound is heard, followed by agitated noises that seem to make the picture tremble and some of the bars fall down. 75% PAL Bars Horse works with playful elements from animation that arouse a variety of asso

"The Scab" is by far my favorite poem and film from the grouping. The imagery is imaginative and fits the poem perfectly. Near flawless editing and well suited graphics are combined to create a truly unique and interesting piece of cinema.

"The Scab" is effective in its stunningly succinct and economic storytelling--replete with conflict, rising actio

I am always fascinated by the way small occurrences can affect the 'big picture' as happens in all world events.I picked this subject as it was easy to film the backgrounds but the payoff was the time involved with CGI. ^The story is a simple one and symbolizes a few myths from our species.

Two scandinavian-looking models are hired to play trac-ball, an action racquet game, for the needs of a greek tv commercial, from the 80s. The setting and all action, tries to simulate Californian landscape and typical relaxed atmosphere, in a ?do it like they do it in California? style of selling the product. However, the setting is in reality quite obviously a Greek beach far different from a Californian one. Despite the considerable effort put in the original footage to make the product appear quite widespread and popular, in reality it failed to become a success in the local market. Centra

In the piece you can see landscapes covered with "post-nuclear" noise, Qtvr-sceneries from MIR-space station, Sarajevo, Japan and Barcelona. The images of the people were taken in New York just before the Iraq-war started as part of a collaborative artprojct with Nathalie Hunter. During the project we interviewed people in

"The Tell-Tale Cell" (A Rehearsal) is a dark comedy. It presents a group of New York actors headed by Terrence G. Cody reading from a short story inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell Tale Heart". In the update, actor Allan Poe (Cody) chronicles his own undoing involving madness & murder brought about by his own obsessive fear of the cellular phone. Here, it's not the beating of a severed heart, but an intrusive cell phone melody (the omnipresent "William Tell Overture") that plays on his guilt-ridden conscience. As a documentary, "The Tell Tale Cell" (A Rehearsal) demonstrates how an author

It was borne of a collaboration between a filmmaker and a dancer/choreographer, and primarily motivated by the characteristics of the location itself. We were dealing with an open rural landscape which is path-like: long, narrow and somewhat isloated. With "Dawn" we developed a structure which involved two cameras, one fixed (left screen) and one hand-held (right screen), which in turn allowed us to experiment with a double distance between the camera and th

?Skating & Things? is a celebration of youth and the skateboard culture as much as it is a traditional skateboard video. The original idea was to lend some young friends my digital video camera and in return they bring me footage. They did. I shot some things as well. I added 3 tracks from local music producers and commissioned a graffiti artist to do the titles. Although the tricks are often far from professional, the video does showcase some good skateboarding along with a positively entertaining vibe.

His henchmen are out of date, squeaky, low-tech robots. Their job is described as "Social cleansing". The weak, injured, obsolete and anything less than efficient are captured and then devoured by the giant creature. Betsy is a 'high-tech' creature, who is highly functional given her severely damaged state. She is in need of repair so that she can resume her job and continue contributing to the progress of the civilization. Will the

John lives is a lesser area of an unnamed city, in a small apartment quietly tucked away from the hustle and bustle city life. Never having had the proper socialization, John is on the verge of breakdown; so fragile that he must devise a set of patterns to keep his mind focused and machinelike, and to keep him out of the daily contact with people. Selling a special and unique drug to an egotistical and naive richboy sustains John just enough to get by. But how long can a man made pattern hold up against the unpredictability of nature? Even the smallest factor can throw off any pattern. And it

With the countless big-budget summer blockbusters and gross-out comedies saturating cinemas across the country, it is easy to forget how much American cinema has progressed over the last 100 years. These short films took characters and placed them in believable situations, relying on the personality of the actors to end up in ridic

Using my own observations, realizations and everything I could possibly gather from my daily life, I set out to paint a portrait of the world through my eyes. What resulted was very different. Instead of creating a portrait of the world around me, the information gathered projected an image of myself. A person I had never seen before. An out-of-touch social being, hoping to one day find my place in this world. I revisited my childhood to pinpoint the exact moment where things went wrong. There is no exact moment. This is all a result of years of adaptation and life experience. What I've accomp
